uHealth Hospital

uHealth has partnered with Sensium Healthcare to deliver the world's leading solution for wireless monitoring of vital signs. Sensium Healthcare is a global pioneer in wireless monitoring of vital signs. The company’s focus is on ultra-low power, lightweight, monitoring solutions which improve patient care and safety, shorten hospital stays and reduce healthcare costs. Set to transform in-hospital vital signs monitoring, the Sensium Healthcare ‘early warning’ system uses world-leading wireless innovation, with proven performance and reliability, to deliver essential, clinical support alongside ultimate patient comfort, confidence and mobility. SensiumVitals® is listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, and is being implemented in Australian hospitals in 2014.

SensiumVitals® system is a wireless system designed to monitor the vital signs of patients on general wards. The system comprises a light-weight, wearable, wireless single patient use patch, which provides vital signs (heart-rate, respiration and axillary temperature) and wirelessly communicates this data to clinicians via the hospital’s IT infrastructure. The SensiumVitals® System is the first single patient use product aimed at the general floor and emergency room of hospitals to have received FDA 510(k) clearance, CE marking and TGA approval. The system takes patient measurements every two minutes, significantly more often than  current practice, where the majority of patients in hospital have vital signs taken only once each 4-8 hours. Infrequent monitoring means that deterioration in patient conditions may go unnoticed, potentially leading to longer stays in hospital, more expensive treatments or even admittance to intensive care.

Designed with the needs of patients and clinicians in mind, SensiumVitals® is a unique, accurate and reliable, ultra-low power wireless system to monitor the vital signs of patients in general care or in Accident & Emergency Department waiting rooms. Developed over several years by world-renowned digital healthcare experts, including Professor Chris Toumazou, Regius Professor of Engineering and founding director of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College.

For Clinicians

SensiumVitals® continuously, accurately and reliably monitors heart rate, respiration rate and axillary temperature, providing real time data every 2 minutes to indicate early warning of patient deterioration. Early intervention can then be made to stabilise the patient and avoid adverse events. The system is configurable to display up to 24 hours of vital signs trend data. Highly flexible, SensiumVitals® allows clinicians to configure alert levels for each vital sign as appropriate to each patient. These alerts can be notified by email, SMS or pager providing information when and where it is needed. Easy to use, SensiumVitals® integrates into the clinical workflow without customisation.

  • Early detection & warning of patient deterioration facilitating rapid clinical intervention
  • Vital signs trending and notifications
  • Allows for physician configurable parameters
  • Provides information where you need it - at the nurse station or on a web enabled device
  • Ultra low power, minimum 5 days single patient use
  • Facilitates patient mobility by removing the need for wires and cables

For Hospitals

SensiumVitals® has been shown to improve patient outcomes by enabling early intervention, thereby avoiding more serious conditions and higher treatment costs. It has been shown to reduce the average length of stay by four to six bed days, saving an average of $5,500 per patient where early intervention was needed (demonstrated by the Saint John’s pilot study, whitepaper available here).  SensiumVitals® is quick, easy to install and is popular with clinicians as it integrates within their existing workflows without requiring customisation or time consuming operation.

  • Improves patient outcomes
  • Reduces patient length of stay (bed days)
  • Reduces patient treatment cost
  • Quick and easy to install, paperless connection to the hospital’s ADT and EMR systems
  • Integrates with existing workflow without customisation

For Patients

SensiumVitals® is the world’s lightest (only 15 grams), thinnest, wearable self-contained patient monitor; making it unobtrusive and extremely comfortable to wear. SensiumVitals® provides reassurance of continuous accurate and reliable vital signs monitoring, day and night, even if patients are sleeping or moving around the ward. When a patient needs to visit another hospital department outside the range of the SensiumVitals® network - for example, to a radiology department - their SensiumVitals® patch stores up to three hours of vital signs data which is then uploaded as soon as the patient comes back into range. Each patch is single use avoiding the risk of cross infection and has at least five days' battery life. The SensiumVitals® patch is simply disposed of after use.

  • Shower proof
  • Reassurance of continuous monitoring, 24/7 throughout the patient stay
  • Safe, accurate and reliable
  • Total freedom of movement - no mains cables, heavy external batteries, pole stands or trolleys to wheel around - with a roaming feature and up to 3 hour memory

For Hospital IT

SensiumVitals® is easy to install and maintain. It is HIPAA compliant and is supplementary to existing systems. The SensiumVitals® patches communicate wirelessly with wall-mounted bridge units via ultra-low power, secure proprietary radio in the 800MHz-900MHz range. The wireless bridges connect via the hospital’s Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) or Ethernet network to the hospital’s servers. SensiumVitals® can be installed standalone or integrated using HL7 with the hospital ADT and/or EMR systems. Data generated by SensiumVitals® is stored on site and vital signs data is only associated with a patient at the Messaging Application Server (MAS). The SensiumVitals® virtual servers require access to two ports on a server machine running Windows 2008 Server. The SensiumVitals system supports up to 600 bridges and each bridge can support up to 8 patients.

  • Operates on two virtual servers, accessing two existing server ports, so typically no additional server hardware required
  • HIPAA compliant, supplementary system
  • HL7 output integrates to Electronic Medical Records and Admission Discharge Transfer systems
  • Patient data stored on site
